Lieutenant Lempriere and The Parachute Queens

Thursday, April 30th at 7.15 pm St Paul’s Venture, Malvern St. B12 8NN

Birmingham History Theatre Company presents a dramatic lecture  telling the story of George lempriere, the famous Balloonist  or “aeronaut” who lived in Handsworth, Birmingham.   He was renowned for his shows from the 1880s to the  1920s , which featured The Parachute Queens.

These daring young women ascended the skies  sitting on a trapeze hanging f below the balloon, up to  astonishing heights, of over 5000 feet.  Then they  pulled on the parachute cord and jumped off  to float  gently to the ground, much to the amazement of the crowds below.  It did not always go to plan and accidents did happen!

The lecture will be illustrated with film clips and contemporary songs, performed live.
