Lieutenat Lempriere and the Parachure Queens
A Dramatic Lectire with film clips and songs
performed as part of Birmingham Heritage Week 2025
George Lempriere was once a well known local aeronaut and showman who has now become largely forgotten. George spent most of his life living in Handsworth and developed a very successful career offering balloon flights and demonstrations all over the UK and Europe from the 1880s up until the outbreak of WW1. He introduced parachute jumps by his “Parachute Queens” and later became a theatrical agent. This lecture aims to rectify this by looking at his extraordinary life and the daring exploits of the young women who worked with him to thrill audiences more than 100 years ago.
The performance incorporated , film, song and material drawn from his extensive archive to tell this story.
